Why We All Hope Kanye West Shows at NYFW

July 14, 2011

There are many reasons why our interest has been piqued by the rumors (although they seem pretty heavily substantiated) that Kanye West will be debuting his womenswear line at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York.  The rapper and fashion show front-row fixture has made his love of all things fashion clear, having interned at Louis Vuitton and collaborated with M/M to create a line of scarves.

But there are a few reasons I am interested in seeing what Kanye has to offer on the runway that don’t involve his ability to steal anyone’s spotlight.

1. He clearly has an appreciation for women’s fashion.  Exhibit A: His Celine top at Coachella earlier this year.

If he can WEAR women’s clothing, why can’t he design it?  Plus, also circulating in the rumor mill is that he’s not going this project alone.  In fact, he’s rumored to have enlisted the help of legendary St Martins MA graduate Louise Wilson for one-on-one personal training and knitwear expert Louise Goldin to head the design.

2. He keeps up with the latest runway looks.  Kanye has become a staple in the front row of the most desired shows, regardless of season and location (he shows up at New York, London and Milan).

3. He knows what he wants and is not afraid to voice his opinion.  (Need I say more? Not really, but I will).

Knowing this about his personality, there is no doubt in my mind that his collection has been designed with a clear theme in mind and all the looks will fit perfectly into this.

4. He IS fashion(able).  He dresses well, knows what looks good on him (which, with his physique, is almost everything) and seems to be very conscious of the designers he chooses to wear.

5. We’re not saying he is going to fail (and actually we think the chances of his womenswear designs flopping at Fashion Week are slim) but, we haven’t had a Kanye Oops in a quite a while, so it would be good enough timing for one…
